Stop Using Your AirFryer to Dry Herbs

Using your oven, microwave or air fryer to dry herbs is generally not recommended for several reasons:

  1. High Temperature: ovens, microwaves and air fryers are designed for cooking, and they typically operate at temperatures much higher than what is suitable for drying herbs. Herbs are delicate and can lose their flavor, aromatic compounds and nutrients when exposed to high heat.
  2. Uneven Drying: Ovens may not provide even airflow or heat distribution, leading to uneven drying of herbs. Some parts may become over-dried and lose flavor, while others may remain moist.
  3. Risk of Overheating: It’s easy to accidentally overheat herbs in an oven, which can result in scorched or burnt herbs, rendering them unusable.
  4. Loss of Aromatics: Herbs contain volatile oils that contribute to their aroma and flavor. The high heat of an oven can cause these oils to evaporate, resulting in herbs with diminished fragrance and taste.
  5. Prolonged Process: Drying herbs in an oven can be a time-consuming process, as it typically requires several hours at low temperatures. This prolonged drying time can further increase the risk of flavor loss.
  6. Less Nutrient Diversity: As said previously, when you use this method to dry your herbs, you lose 70% of the nutritional value due to the heat. So if you are using these herbs for medicinal purposes, you then have to use 3 to 4 times as much to be able to get the same effect.

Consider these alternative methods for drying herbs:

  1. Air Drying: This is one of the most traditional and effective methods for drying herbs. Tie bundles of herbs together and hang them upside down in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. This allows the herbs to dry naturally, preserving their flavor and aroma.
  2. Herb Drying Racks: Herb drying racks or screens provide a flat, well-ventilated surface for herbs to air dry. This method is particularly useful for herbs with flat leaves, like basil and mint.
  3. Freezing: An alternative to drying, you can freeze herbs in an airtight container or as ice cubes in water or oil. Freezing helps retain the fresh flavor and aroma.

In conclusion, using your oven, microwave or air fryer to dry herbs is not recommended due to the high temperature, uneven drying, and potential loss of flavor, aroma and most importantly nutrients. Opt for more appropriate methods like air drying or other alternatives to preserve the quality of your herbs.
