Essential Oils for Headaches

Essential Oils for Headaches

Essential oils are some of the best and most effective remedies for headaches, as physicians already knew for hundreds of years before pharmaceuticals became the well advertised remedies of choice. More recently, in a small scale study with a double-blind, placebocontrolled, randomized cross-over design, researchers obtained significant reduction in headache pain from topical use of peppermint essential oil combined with ethanol (alcohol).

PAIN REDUCING BLEND

1 ounce vodka

5 drops peppermint essential oil

  1. Pour the vodka into a small glass of ceramic bowl.
  2. Add the peppermint essential oil to the vodka, and stir to combine.
  3. Using a cotton ball, apply this blend with broad strokes all over your forehead, your temples, and the back of your neck.
  4. With your eyes closed, do your best to relax until the pain subsides.

COLD PACK

1 cup refrigerated water

5 drops peppermint essential oil

  1. Pour the refrigerated water into a glass or ceramic bowl or low basin.
  2. Add the peppermint essential oil to the water.
  3. Use a hand towel or cloth bandage and place on the surface of the water, and let the compress become completely saturated.
  4. Place cold pack on your forehead.
  5. Keep the cold pack in place until it warms to body temperature.
  6. Repeat this treatment as often as needed to reduce headache pain.
