CARNIVORE DIET COOKBOOK: Beef Casserole

Health Tip of the Day!

Why consume real sugar opposed to artificial sweeteners?

If you have been doing your research, you have seen that the carnivore diet cuts out most if not all sugars from your diet. But in some cases you are still going to have a little bit of sugar. And if you are going to eat it what type of sugar should you be consuming.

I’ve gone over this topic with many people prior to me even going onto the carnivore diet. And from my research and beliefs if it did not come from nature I should not eat it.

While artificial sweeteners may seem like a healthy alternative to real sugar, there are several reasons why consuming real sugar may be a better choice.

  1. Natural and Unprocessed

Real sugar is a natural and unprocessed food, whereas artificial sweeteners are highly processed and chemically derived. Artificial sweeteners are typically made in a lab and do not provide any nutritional value. In contrast, real sugar is made from natural sources such as sugar cane or sugar beets and contains small amounts of vitamins and minerals.

  1. Taste and Flavor

Artificial sweeteners are often much sweeter than real sugar, which can lead to a desire for increasingly sweet foods over time. Additionally, artificial sweeteners can leave a metallic or bitter aftertaste. Real sugar provides a natural sweetness that enhances the flavor of foods and beverages without overwhelming them.

  1. Health Risks

There are health risks associated with consuming artificial sweeteners. Studies have linked them to increased risk of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Some artificial sweeteners have also been linked to an increased risk of cancer. While more research is needed to fully understand these risks, consuming real sugar in moderation is a safer choice.

  1. Blood Sugar Control

Artificial sweeteners do not affect blood sugar levels in the same way that real sugar does. Real sugar provides a quick source of energy that can cause blood sugar levels to rise rapidly. However, this can be managed through moderation and pairing sugar with other foods that slow down the absorption of glucose. In contrast, artificial sweeteners do not raise blood sugar levels, but they can still affect insulin levels and may lead to overconsumption of other high-calorie foods.

  1. Nutritional Value

Real sugar provides small amounts of nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. While these nutrients are not present in large amounts, they can still contribute to overall health and well-being. In contrast, artificial sweeteners provide no nutritional value.

  1. Environmentally Sustainable

The production of artificial sweeteners can have negative environmental impacts, including the use of fossil fuels, water consumption, and waste production. Real sugar, on the other hand, is a renewable resource that can be produced sustainably.

In conclusion, while artificial sweeteners may seem like a healthy alternative to real sugar, there are several reasons to choose real sugar instead. Real sugar is natural, provides taste and flavor, has fewer health risks, affects blood sugar control, provides small amounts of nutrients, and is environmentally sustainable. However, it is important to consume sugar in moderation and to choose sources such as honey, maple syrup, or unrefined cane sugar.
